Databases

To practice using database search methods I searched four different databases using four different search methods. Here are my results of searching for effects of technology on children's literature.

Building Block - Library Lit
Using the building block method I searched the Library Lit database, using the terms children or youth and literature or book and technology or automation. This search gave me several relevant articles. This was one of the hits from this search.
Pinn, K.
The Library in the Computer [database providing subject access to contents of books]. The School Librarian v. 36 (November 1988) p. 130-136.

Successive Fractions - Project Muse

When I started searching in Project Muse I intended to use specific facet search but the parameters were much too broad so I switched to successive fractions and again found several useful articles including the following.
Dresang, E., Koh, K. Radical Change Theory, Youth Information Behavior, and School Libraries
Library Trends v.58 (Summer 2009) p. 26-50.

Citation Pearl Growing - ERIC
This search method grew frustrating, the search parameters very quickly became too broad. When moving from a known article to include the broader subjects like computers in education then most of the articles were irrelevant to my subject. Upon browsing through the subject areas though I did find some relevant articles. For example, this article.
Anderson, R., Balajthy, E. Stories about Struggling Readers and Technology Reading Teacher v. 62 (March 2009) p. 540-542.

Specific Facet -JStor
I used specific facet to search the JStor database since the database itself is a little outside of the field of what I was looking for, however, even searching technology effects yielded 8,000 hits which was still too broad. After sifting through the results I did find this article which was loosely related to my inquiry.
Leidner, D., Jarvenpaa, S. The Use of Information Technology to Enhance Management School Education : A Theoretical View MIS Quarterly, v. 19 (Sept. 1995) p. 265 - 291.

Conclusion
Depending on the database that is being searched and the inquiry the most efficient search method is to use a combination of searches to find the most relevant results.

Tagging/Indexing/Catloging

I found this books while searching through www.librarything.com it had the following tags: adult(2) computers(4) culture(3) digital(5) digital culture(2) digital literacy(2) digital media(2) digital natives(4) education(7) generations(2) growing up(1) information society(3) information technology(4) internet(16) kids(2) marketing(1) mass media(2) millenials(2) non-fiction(12) social media(2) social science(3) society(3) sociology(7) tech(1) technology(17) to read(5) trends(2) web(3) web 2.0(4) youth.
This book is related to my topic in that it discusses what children are like. Anyone working with children can use this book to help them relate to youth of today.

RSS feed

When I have been searching on the web for information about technology in relation to the library I kept running into this site lisnews, which is, "LISNews is an open community of folks who are interested in keeping each other informed on the news of the day". I thought this was a perfect site to keep up with the latest news for library and information science.
